City Slickers, like most of the comedies I like best, works both as a vehicle for some comely ample humor and as a drama with heart, with something accurate at stake. Mitch (Billy Crystal) and his two best friends (Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby) are each having midlife crises in their enjoy ways. In an disaster to catch themselves they join a two-week dude cattle drive adventure where they do indeed surpass their customary boundaries and accumulate more about who they really are. Jack Palance plays Curly, the imposing, tough-as-cowhide, scene-stealing hotfoot boss. I’ve always enjoyed this movie and gaze forward to the current features, especially the commentary. Looks like it will be a proper special edition. I’d give the movie four or maybe four-and-a-half stars, but I’ll round up for the special features.

I ordered this because it was supposed to be the Collector’s Edition with Commentary, Featurettes & Deleted scenes. I received it and, while the camouflage states it is the Collector’s Edition with the extras, it is not. So I returned it to Amazon, asking them to replace it, which they did remarkably like a flash. Pickle is, the replacement is exactly like the first one I received — no commentary, no featurettes, no deleted scenes although the conceal says they are there. So now I am trying to contact someone at MGM or Fox to sort this out. (Having no luck at that but I will continue to try.) I can’t blame Amazon for having received mismarked packaging. I care for the movie but I bought this as a replacement so I would have the extras and, alas, the extras are not there, so the rating is two stars because the product is not as advertised.

First of all I’m surprised this went to Blu. I remember seeing this in the theater when it first came out and instantly liked it. Going in though, you have to be aware that this is a 100% dialogue driven film. There’s no action really, there’s only three actors in the movie (well five, if you count the two in the very beginning for about two minutes) . If you go into this expecting anything but essentially a theatrical play, then you may be disappointed.

Personally I believe this is one of Robert Downey Jr’s best roles to date, along with Less than Zero. I assume roles like this, in which he shines so well as the perennial f*** up, doomed by his contain inabilities to gather the fact that there are people who will not impartial abandon him at the slightest whim, hits too finish to home for many people. They can’t separate the fact that he’s acting, from his sincere life struggles with drug addiction and other things.

And as such, when he puts on a astronomical performance, people toss it aside and say “it’s honest him playing himself”. Which is a large disservice, I mediate.

Heather Graham is very obedient in this, as is Natasha Gregson-Wagner (daughter of Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood), although Wagner can be EXTREMELY grating after awhile. She comes off as simultaneously cute & sexy, and irritating. Eventually you’re waiting for someone to fair yowl at her to shut up.

But all three actors do a very great job with this, and from what I’ve read there was virtually no script. It was all improv, and I deem that speaks volumes to how genuine these actors are.

I’ve read reviews of this which say that it’s a movie where people impartial talk about nothing. And that’s not good at all. It couldn’t be farther from the truth. This film, while not a perfect film, is a expansive film as it pertains to relationships. I reflect many people watching can narrate to this problem that Downey Jr. finds himself in.

Perhaps not the staunch region, but we’ve all lied to distinguished others. We’ve all been fervent with people and perhaps you don’t feel exactly the same as they do, but you lie and say you do. If only to gain them feel better. But that ends up hurting them anyway when they secure out.

Here we have Downey Jr. who’s dating two women simultaneously, all the while telling them that he loves them, and only them. Neither have any clue that he’s doing this with someone else other than honest them, thinking he’s a one woman man.

Very qualified film, and one definitely not to be missed by fans of Downey Jr. Honest know what you’re getting into with this. It’s not a mammoth budget care for special effects flick, and it’s not an erotic threeway Cinemax flick, despite the intelligent title.

This movie has ample actors but the dialog, which is 90% of the movie, is hard to bewitch seriously. That being said, imo Heather’s hottest movie and if this were the unrated version I’d collect consume the blu-ray in a heartbeat. But it’s not and I don’t gape them releasing it any time soon, so they really missed the boat on this one.

With the release of the “next chapter” in the OAV series (“Geobreeders 2″ / “File-XX: Breakthrough”), it was my hope that many of the difficulties in following the events of the first “File” would be smoothed out and launch to have the overall epic form some sort of sense. Based on the manga by Ito Akihiro, Geobreeders follows the adventures of the Kagura Security agency: five girls, one guy and a phantom cat.

The female members of the team comprise of the president of the agency: diminutive red-haired Yuka — somewhat of merc; computer-wiz Takami who has serious problems dealing with stress; ‘Crimson Shooting Star’ with her affinity to ample guns; the pretty, brass knuckle-toting accountant Eiko; and Yu, the chain-smoking driver with tendency to descend asleep often.

Taba is the token male of the group, and grand of the humor comes at his expense — he takes all the worst jobs, and usually gets no credit. And then you have the phantom cat adopted by Taba – Maya the cat-girl (be obvious to leer for a spoof ad featuring two other Maya’s from other, well-liked anime) .

The premise of the exhibit centers on Kagura Security’s ghost-busting activities (a la Phantom Quest Corps) – the ‘ghosts’ are electronic apparitions or phantom cats that can control any computer system. The three episodes on this disc features tidy and fluid animation, with a blooming amount of fan-service to boot.

If you’re looking for some silliness and action in an anime, Geobreeders is highly recommended.

Informative and insightful, but my application was for middle school science ecology consume. As the problems increase in span and complexity more time is needed for the presentation and explanation.

The first program was easier to rupture up for classroom exhaust. NG provided lesson plans to facilitate classroom exhaust, for the first spot of programs. Apparently the second region doesn’t have the classroom help the first did.

I enjoyed previewing the disk at home. Easy to understand for high school or college students with prior knowledge of chemistry and ecological concepts. I am not clear how to wreck it up into bite size chunks for science7 classroom discussion…yet

Documentary raised well-known problems of the Earth well beeing. But I don’t like directing of the movie. It recognize like ecology is separate and Edward Norton’s enormous shoes are significant portion of the movie. Really queer!!!

I purchased the Special Edition of this movie recently and couldn’t gain that the audio was monophonic. I was thus pleasantly surprised to glimpse that in this edition of the DVD they restored the current multi-channel soundtrack. Even the casual listener will peep the dissimilarity immediately.

To my knowledge the movie itself is the same as on the Special Edition (no added or crop scenes) so I won’t ruin your time commenting on that. I impartial wanted to bring attention to the fact that the Deluxe Edition of this movie is the ONLY one any serious movie collector should reflect.

The movie “Stand By Me” was made in 1986. It is based on a novella published in 1982 and the anecdote takes position in 1959 (movie) or 1960 (novella) . But the sage is timeless – the conflicts and the difficult transition from child to adult apply to every generation.

There is a lot of trivia (pop songs, slang expressions, TV shows, etc.) from 1959/1960 in the movie and the novella, but this doesn’t really anchor the epic to that era. Every generation has it’s enjoy trivia that is very notable to that generation. But today’s generation can smile at the trivia of 47 years ago and unruffled seek the parallels between that trivia and their (to them) worthy more unbelievable trivia.

The movie is based on a novella by Stephen King called “The Body”. This is one of Stephen King’s best stories, and is well worth reading or, if you like audio books, listening to. The audio version lasts almost six hours and is read by Frank Muller. Highly recommended. If you’d take to read the anecdote yourself then you should bewitch the book “Different Seasons”, a collection of four Stephen King novellas including “The Body”.

The movie and the novella are very similar. There are, of course, many cramped differences, for example the town of Castle Rock has been moved from Maine to Oregon, there is more coverage of the older juvenile delinquents and less coverage of Gordie’s stories and of Gordie as an adult, the site where the bloodsuckers are encountered is different, etc., etc. The biggest dissimilarity is that in the novella Chris is the main protagonist, or hero if you like, while in the movie it is Gordie. Smooth, this movie is truer to the written source than most movies based on books are.

So why did Choose Reiner create these changes, and what on earth did Stephen King reflect of them?

Here’s where the magic of DVD extra material comes in. The “Special Edition” (2000) and “Deluxe Edition” (2005) DVDs both include a 35-minute documentary “featurette” called “Walking the Tracks: The Summer of Stand By Me”, which was made in 2000. Stephen King, Bewitch Reiner and all of the major actors in the movie (except River Phoenix, who died in 1993) participate.

In this documentary film Hold Reiner tells that he identified personally more with Gordie than Chris, and therefore decided to compose the movie Gordie’s memoir. And Stephen King says that he respected Hold Reiner’s decision and thinks that “Stand By Me” was the first movie adaptation of his work that really fulfilled the spirit of the legend.

Stephen King also says that many of the things that happen in “The Body” and in “Stand By Me” are things he experienced himself in his childhood. This makes the epic somewhat autobiographical, with Gordie being in some ways the young Stephen King. In the novella “The Body” this is quite pronounced in that an adult Gordie is telling the anecdote in the first person, and also tells how he’s now become a successful writer of panic books.

So the bottom line is, if you like the movie then read or listen to the novella. And after you’ve read the novella and seen the movie, check out the DVD featurette that ties them together.

While “The Seventh Seal,” “Wild Strawberries,” and “Cries and Whispers,” are better known, Ingmar Bergman’s “Trilogy,” variously known as the “Faith Trilogy” or the “Chamber Film” trilogy, is for my money Ingmar Bergman’s supreme achievement, approachable only by “Persona” and “Shame” later that decade. Casting a penetrating contemplate on the zeitgeist of the mid-Twentieth century and the concurrent loss of faith in outmoded notions of authority and truth, Bergman created some of the most provocative works world cinema and the twentieth century ever produced.

It may be more fashionable now for film followers to say they rob Bresson, Fassbinder, or von Trier–Bergman was so highly praised in the 1960s that it’s almost chic to deride him these days–but “The Trilogy,” particularly the second and third film in the dwelling, remain unparalleled achievements. “Winter Light” and “The Silence” are breathtakingly dramatic, and, despite what you might have heard, not at all contingent upon an interest in Christian theology.

One of my stop friends is a Muslim-raised atheist from Iran, and when I brought up “Winter Light” to him a month or so ago he said: “My God! That’s one of the most intense films I’ve ever seen! You can’t breath while you’re watching it, it’s so worthy!” He’s just. And despite initial fears that this DVD edition would impartial reissue the previously released censored versions of these films, Criterion has happily gone aid to Sweden and re-mastered the director’s fill, unusual cuts of each for this boxed site.

If you resolve that you can only be bothered to contain only the twenty best movies ever produced on DVDs, this site should count as one of the twenty. Von Trier, Kubrick, Dryer, Bresson, Kiarostami, Kurosawa, Ozu, Fassbinder, Renoir… None of them ever hit the heights Bergman achieved with “The Trilogy.”

I reflect Bergman’s work from this period (early 60s) to be among his finest, so I pre-ordered this dwelling and have now watched all four (not three) DVDs. And I get that The Silence as presented here restores two of the Gunnel Lindblom-Birger Malmsten scenes, parts of which are absent from the Home Vision Cinema video, in case you were wondering.

For the uninitiated, the trilogy is heavy stuff. If you haven’t seen any Bergman, you might want to originate with the Criterion DVD of Wild Strawberries and go on from there. As for myself, I’m always amazed at the consistency of Bergman’s vision, the depth of the performances here, the beauty of the writing and complete mastery of light and sound. The cinematographic compositions, especially in Through a Glass Darkly and The Silence, are frequently awe-inspiring.

The fourth DVD is entitled Ingmar Bergman Makes a Movie. It is a five-part documentary filmed by Vilgot Sjöman for Swedish television and it details the making of Winter Light, from beginning to raze. Roughly 50% is made up of interviews with Bergman where he discusses the themes of the film, the challenges of bringing a completed script to the conceal, his relationship and working methods with his cast and crew, and his reaction to critics (presumably Swedish) upon the film’s premiere. The other 50% of the documentary shows Bergman and crew at work scouting locations, building the sets, selecting costumes for Ingrid Thulin and Gunnar Björnstrand, blocking, rehearsing and shooting an early scene in the film, later editing another scene, mixing the sound, then screening the finished product. It is an invaluable document for Bergman lovers and film students and I’m gratified to have it in my collection.

But I’m scratching my head over the lack of extras for the three feature films. If Wild Strawberries deserves one commentary, The Silence alone deserves THREE: one for background and important exegesis, another for lighting and composition, and a third for camera movement, editing and sound. Peter Cowie gives us 10-minute overviews of the films, and they are top-notch, but not really satisfying. There are American theatrical trailers and a mish-mash gallery of posters for the films from several countries (not Sweden or the Nordic countries, however) .

And if you’re looking for funny relief, there are English-dubbed soundtracks for the films. No serious Bergman admirer will spend them, but if your Pee-Wee’s Substantial Adventure DVD is not readily at hand, try switching the soundtrack to the dubbed version, especially during some of the ample emotional scenes. It’s almost a sacrilege, but their crudeness and ineptitude will provoke laughter.

Our copy of Residence Problem was ruined and we needed a fresh one, the kids are really into Looney Tunes and this was perfect. I haven’t seen “Funky Monkey” personally, but I believe the other three are worth the $ for being so absorbing and the kids delight in them all quite a bit, a gigantic deal if your kids like Looney Tunes. They are double sided discs, one on each side (two disks), fyi.

This collection of the four movies that are featured on the dvd are a lot fun for the whole family. My 3 year traditional grandson even likes watching it.

I saw this movie when it was in the theater in 1989. I liked it so remarkable that I had to steal it on VHS. Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor star as two innocent guys-one deaf, one blind, and both are on the accelerate for a execute they didn’t commit! As I grow in age and peep this movie, I feel almost robbed that I wasn’t either around, or archaic enough to bask in the pure genius that both Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor held.

This film is about a blind man (played wonderfully by Richard Pryor) who’s down on his luck and in need of a job. Luckily for him, a deaf newsstand owner (played with all the droll gusto he can muster by Gene Wilder) happens to be hiring.

Pryor owes a bookie sizable time, and when the bookie comes looking for him at his novel spot of employment, chaos ensues because he’s murdered. Wally (Pryor) doesn’t gaze it, and Dave (Wilder) doesn’t hear it. The murderers fetch away and Dave and Wally are suspected. Their misson: positive their name.

Craziness and hilarity ensue.

Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor are two highly underrated talents before the camera. The adventures that these two bad characters go through is something that a wide audience can be pleased. The employ of two ailments such as deafness and blindness is not exploited or made fun of, honest former for titanic funny timing and situations.

If you’re a fan of tall comedy, and attractive ample action that features two droll geniuses, I highly suggest this film.

As others have mentioned, this is perhaps the only pro-war film ever made about our involvement in Vietnam, either at the time of the war or since.

Pretty remarkable these days, nobody espouses a pro-war stance on the Vietnam conflict. It was not a “pleasurable” war, after all, and the war will always be portion and parcel with the agony of America’s social chaos in the slow 60’s and early 70’s. However, at the time, the social battle lines were well defined between the peaceniks and the hawks; those against the war, and those all in favor of it. Without the thirty-plus years of hindsight to benefit them set aside this conflict in perspective, the hawks were elegant gung-ho. Likewise, the the peaceniks, who idea that if we honest “care for each other” everything would be alright, looks stunning naive and childish. If only the world were so simple.

Like the war, this film engenders strong feelings in those who study it. The DUKE was a known hawk, and you can eye it shine through in every line, and in every scene. Like most hawks at the time, I suspect that The DUKE simply notion Vietnam was objective like any other war (most likely, World War II), and it was incomprehensible to them that anyone would be against it. The film, in turn, reflects the hawk viewpoint.

In other words, you could substitute the Vietnamese with the Japanese in WWII, and the film would be more or less the same (pleasant, upstanding Americans vs. sizable awful empire) . The retract of the enemy general is pure WWII melodrama. The character of Petersen, the “scrounger”, is also a stock character from a WWII movie. The staging of the action, the commando raid, blowing up a bridge, etc., all cry WWII.

DUKE co-directs, and despite being filmed in Georgia (which looks nothing like Southeast Asia!), the results are really dazzling grand. The raid to purchase the enemy general is comical, but tense and inspiring nevertheless. The characterizations are solid. The film flows nicely, and isn’t too long or too short. The cinematography is workable, and at times, even impressive. There’s plenty of action, too!

When you peek DUKE react to the child running from helicopter to helicopter looking for Petersen, you cannot assist but have respect for this film. Certainly one of the best endings in American film history follows. Politics and anti-war sentiment of today’s PC society aside, this is a big war film that honors the best of the best; the Green Berets.

Let me hold a moment and say a word or two about David Janssen’s role as George Beckworth, the reporter for a left-wing and anti-war newspaper. The character is a shrimp too positive, and at first, a runt too strong on the anti-war sentiment. His conversion was a limited too predictable, but the handling of his conversion to pro-war is very well-handled. Ultimately, I mediate it was a believable transformation, and this is due entirely to Janssen’s talent. In the hands of another, less skilled actor, the Beckworth character could have been a gigantic sore point, but Janssen makes Beckworth a still force, a wall of anti-war sentiment needing to be erroded away by the reality of the residence he finds himself in. In many ways, I consider Janssen’s underplayed come for Beckworth makes him seem more steady, and ultimately sells the character. It helps sell the movie too, despite our unique perspective on the war.

Appearing in supporting roles are Jack Soo (Carve Yemana on “Barney Miller”), George Takei (Sulu on “Star Chase”), and Bruce Cabot. Cabot had starred in a big many films, and “The Green Beret” is one of his last. He was a popular DUKE co-star, appearing with DUKE in “Hellfighters”, “Tall Jake”, “Chisum”, “The War Wagon”, “In Harm’s Arrangement”, “McLintock!”, “Hatari!”, and others. Cabot is probably most notorious for rescuing Fay Wray from King Kong. Also on hand is The DUKE’s son, Patrick Wayne. Patrick appears as the commander of a Seabee team, following in his father’s footsteps (DUKE starred in the eminent homage to the outfit, “The Fighting Seabees”) .

DUKE fans should try to locate a copy of the video “No Substitute For Victory” (available on this status), in which DUKE hosts a right-wing documentary examine at our reasons for fighting in Southeast Asia. Watching this documentary after the film will give the viewer original insights into the thinking of the hawks at the time, and their station during the Vietnam conflict.

If you ever read Gustav Hasford’s “The Short-Timers” (which “Paunchy Metal Jacket” was based on) you know how he felt about this movie: “Let’s observe the Duke and Mr. Sulu karate-chop Victor Charlie in a Kodicolor fantasy about Vietnam.” In other words, he belief it was bunk. So does everyone else on the left, who have bought into the anecdote that Vietnam was a purely guerilla war and that the human-wave assaults employed by the NVA/VC on Col. Kirby’s camp in the film would never have happened in precise life. In point of fact almost 90% of the fighting in Vietnam was of the obsolete type in the Central Highlands or the valleys (“We Were Soldiers”) while only 10% of the troops were employed in the rice paddies you watch in movies like “Platoon.” Whenever the NVA fought out in the begin, a la the Tet Offensive, they were well and truly beaten, but their leadership was ruthless and understood that by trading 5 Vietnamese lives for one American, the U.S. will to fight would eventually wreck. John Wayne’s Col. Kirby and his elite Special Forces “A” Team (no, not the one with Hannibal and Face and B.A. Barracus) is sent to Vietnam to place detestable camps which offer protection to the local farmers from the murderous Viet Cong (whose crimes against their bear people are well documented here) . The soldiers drawl the locals how to fight while providing basic medical care and 20th century improvements to their primeval intention of life. There is the usual ample John Wayne type battle as the VC try to overrun the camp, followed by a commando raid deep into enemy territory, and a tragic-heroic ending. But the movie is more than the sum of its parts. It is not mere entertainment, it is personal propiganda, designed to indicate the Duke’s argument for why America was fighting in Vietnam at all. The only failing is its sappiness and jingoism, which construct it easy for opponents to ridicule. But making fun of it doesn’t choose away the fact that the Duke’s argument was based on something he is rarely credited for — human decency. What “fair” did we have in Vietnam? I guess the same “factual” we had to land on the beaches of Normandy. We had no “good” at all — it was objective the “fair thing to do”, to wait on a unpleasant government (South Vietnam) against a distinguished worse government (North Vietnam) that customary methods like mass killings of teachers, civil servants, nuns, missionaries, and village chiefs to destabilze the South and forcibly unite the country. You can argue about the legitimacy of taking sides in a civil war all day, but any country that uses methods like burying people alive and raping women to death as a matter of military policy probably deserves to be opposed, yes?

Anyway, let me select a moment to say I Adore THIS FREAKIN’ MOVIE. Growing up, profitable venerable Washington D.C. Channel 20 (remember when you only had ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and your one local channel? Channel 20 was ours) played this movie, (along with “The Battle of the Bulge” and “The Bridge at Remagen” and some other classics) about once every other day. Even the idea of it brings a smile to my face. Here was a guy, John Wayne, who had the guts to fabricate a film this flag-shakingly true waft at a time when patriotism was growing unfashionable and millions of people were abandoning and spitting on the ideals that he embodied — which, by the diagram, a few of us tranquil believe correct. As a movie, “The Green Berets” has a hard ideology of anti-communism and shows the newfangled Special Forces as a sort of elite brotherhood consecrated to fight against it. I believe a lot of the disfavor directed against this movie comes from the surity of Kirby’s (meaning John Wayne’s) beliefs. They are rock-solid and not up for debate or negotiation. He understands what will (and did) happen to Vietnam if the North wins the war, and fights bitterly to prevent this from happening, while simultaneously trying to obtain over a stubborn journalist who has legitimate doubts about our involvement. No seek information from, this movie is jingoistic and predictable, a Vietnam war movie packed in WWII casing, but who cares?
